Becky & Steve
7 June 2008
They Met Becky and Steve first found each other in Bequia in the St. Vincent and the Grenadines islands in the Caribbean. Becky was working there with special needs children at local schools as a US Peace Corps volunteer whilst Steve was on holiday with his family. The rest is history and when it came down to the proposal, Steve took along Becky’s Mum and best friend to choose the ring. Steve later proposed with a doughnut to break the tension but got down on one knee for the real thing!
Wedding Venue Becky and Steve decided to marry in Bequia, where they first met, as they both knew the island well. The island was small enough not to have a huge variety of venues, making the Princess Margaret Beach an obvious choice. They loved the secluded privacy as well as it being set on a beautiful beach with the reception afterwards held at Jack’s Bar, also on the beach.
The Theme The couple chose to have a theme of island and beach life for their wedding, with the romantic ceremony taking place on the beach, with guests sitting on chairs in the sand. The couple tied the knot under a palm and flower arch while at the reception the tables were decorated with bamboo holders with local flowers and orchids. The guests were also ferried in on a little wooden water taxi, which helped add to the theme of island life. The couple wanted their big day to be light-hearted and fun, and the stunning setting provided everything they needed.
What They Wore The bride looked gorgeous in a fitted and corseted, strapless, white fishtail gown, accessorized with yellow flowers in her hair and a cultured pearl bracelet, adding to their beach wedding feel. Becky also wore diamond and pearl earrings, borrowed from her Mum, to finish off the outfit.
The groom wore a light-weight kilt from USA Kilts with a cool, white linen shirt from JCrew, along with brown Birkenstock sandals, adding a summery note.
Becky’s maid of honour wore a yellow dress from Bebe with the flower girl wearing a white sun dress with a yellow ribbon sash to match. The best man wore the same as the groom as did the ring bearer except for a yellow shirt.
The Cake The couple had two cakes: one of a three-tiered chocolate cake decorated with iced yellow flowers and their initials on top, surrounded by exotic pink flowers. The groom had a separate more traditional fruitcake, decorated with blue icing. Both cakes were made by friends.
The Flowers The bride carried a bouquet of colourful tropical flowers - some garden-picked. The groom, best man and ring bearer all had a buttonhole of a purple flower.
First Dance The newlyweds danced to Stay With You by John Legend, followed by a mixture of reggae and fun sing-along songs from a local string band for the guests.
A Moment To Remember The couple loved the ceremony as they had written their own vows, making it very personal and special to them. A particularly memorable moment was when all of the boys and girls went mooning on the jetty - possibly because of the very strong rum punch served at their reception!
Honeymoon The couple decided to travel around the world for their exotic and adventurous honeymoon, starting in South America, followed by Australia, New Zealand, South East Asia, India, Jordan and finally Egypt, proposing to return in February next year!
Any Advice The couple advise to, ‘Make good use of friends, the best man and matron of honour.’ As well as commenting, ‘Don’t stress over all the little things - it will all come together, and people will not even notice when things don’t go to plan.’ The groom also gives a top tip of, ‘Support the bride as much as you can. Help out and be proactive in the planning.’
