HONEYMOON How To Get An Upgrade 10731 views

Getting an upgrade to first class is the holy grail of honeymoons, but just because it’s difficult doesn’t mean it’s impossible. Follow our tried-and-tested tips to swapping cattle class for upper class.

1. Join the frequent flyer membership of your airline (such as BA’s Executive Club). It shows you’re loyal and are more likely to be suitable for an upgrade ahead of other passengers who aren’t members.

2. If you can, try to book yourselves on to a flight that’s likely to have a very full economy section – usually during busy holiday periods. If economy’s full, the airline might try to squeeze passengers into first class (or even premium economy would do) rather than turn them away altogether.

3. When you’re booking your flight through a travel agent, be friendly to them! If they like you, they may be willing to mark you as SFU (Suitable for Upgrade). The airline can ignore this information, but it’s worth a try.

4. Try to fly outside of business hours as the first class cabin is likely to be full on these flights. Try flying at odd hours of the day and on the weekends.

5. Be very polite to all the staff you deal with at check-in – and mention the H word! They’re more likely to upgrade you if you’re on honeymoon, although they might ask to see your wedding certificate so take it just in case.

6. Dress like a first class passenger. You don’t have to go overboard but avoid tatty jeans and flip flops and other obviously “non-first-class” clothing.

7. Finally, it can’t hurt to come out and just ask. But do it discreetly – if other passengers hear you they might ask too and your check-in agent won’t be too happy.

Good luck and have a great honeymoon!
