Emma decides to go for the back up plan and take a few precautions as she flexes the credit card on deposits.

According to most of my already-married friends, wedding insurance seems to be quite a new phenomenon. However, considering the average cost of modern wedding ranges from £10,000 to £20,000, it seems to me to be an awful lot of money to be spending without any form of insurance protection. We’ve just started putting deposits down on our venues but I want to make sure we’ve got some insurance in place, just to protect ourselves against the unexpected.

It might sound a little bit over the top, but it doesn’t take much for a wedding to go wrong. You just need the bride to get a bit of food poisoning, or a pipe to burst and flood the church, and the carefully scheduled big day suddenly starts to unravel.

Of course, the insurance doesn’t prevent anything going wrong, and can’t salve your disappointment if indeed it does, but at least it will help soften the blow if it’s all gone pear-shaped and might give you a chance to re-schedule your honeymoon or get some compensation back for lost or damaged presents and so on.

Top tip: Check your home insurance and make sure there is adequate cover for your dress, the rings and the wedding gifts.
