Hi Everyone
Not been on here for a while. The last 3 months have been very stressful, and very sadly my father in law to be passed away, so the wedding has been the last thing on our minds.
However, we have started to look at this again and booked our photographer and florist.
We are wanting a band during the evening reception, and i've got some demo cd's, however most of them only play 2 x 45min sets. I expected them to be on all night, especially as most are around £1000... is this the norm? At this rate we'll have to get a DJ as well.... more expense.
Does anyone know of a good band, who would travel to the lake district? Ideally we would like a male / female vocalist (maybe 4-5 in the band) and I want the dance floor full all night!
Hope to hear your ideas, and hope all your planning is going well
Bye for now Catherine xx

ah thanks very much, that means alot. As everyone says time is a great healer, but I think getting through the day will be so hard for us both, but we know he'll be there looking down on us.
Hope all your plans are going well xxx

Hi
Speaking personally being married to a man in a band, the quote you've been given for a private function sounds about right, particularly if they are having to do their own P.A and they are good quality. My recommendation though would always be to check the band out live if possible, as demo cd's can be done in a studio, and you want to know if the band is really what you want.
I know you would like the band to play all night, but you also have to realise that it is exhausting, however you may be able to get someone to stretch the two sets longer, but they need a break just to recharge, lubricate etc.
Hope this helps.
Rach

£1k for the evening sounds about right for a band ... I hired a wedding singer who is really excellent for £310 for 1.5 hours and also the Liverpool Samba Band who charge approx £700 for the evening plus a DJ. x

Hello
Me again!! You could try advertisig in a local uni, you may find a band looking to earn some extra dosh that'll play, but once again I would go and see them live first if possible.

my cousin is getting married in may 2010 and they have hired a band to play. they are only playing for 1 hour and its costing them £300. this band only plays at the local pub but they are really good and he asked them to play at their wedding. They are having a DJ for the rest of the night. What ever band you are interested in, i would definately try to go and see them play live. As for our wedding we are just having a DJ.

I think it won't be possible to get a good and experienced wedding band that plays all night for under 1k. I know there are some bands that play up to four sets a night but they are not too cheap. Don't book the band that plays 2x45min for 1k, that's really too much.

Hi
I thought i'd give you a breakdown of the cost for my wedding to give you some idea.
The DJ cost was £300.00 but this included a PA for the band as our venue was quite large and the band equiptment needed the push for sound quality, however this was all day and as he was a friend he got fed as well, but in total he probably did a 12 hours day what with setting up, taking it all down etc. The problem we had was that we did everything in the one venue, we got married, ate and had the reception, so really him and the band had to be set up before this.
The band is a five piece, and between them they had 6 guitars, 2 bass guitars, a drum kit, and three keyboards, this was without the amps etc as well. They also set up before the wedding, but as it was the hubby's band that were playing they were invited to the wedding and to eat etc. If we had been charged, for 2 x 1 hour sets at a private function this would probably have been in the region of £750, to cover cost of petrol, time setting up, playing, PRS etc etc. However, they are at the top end, and do have a lot of equiptment etc.
All in all, it would've come to more than 1k had I paid for it all (I paid for it on honeymoon lol ), but, although they only played for a couple of hours, as I said the DJ was there most of the day and played music of our choosing in between.
You need to also consider the fact that some DJ's will charge you from the time they have to set up the equipment, I particularly noticed this in London, when we were still decided whether to marry in Greenwich or somewhere in Kent (I live on the border between the two).
Depending on your venue, they may also require the band/DJ to have Public Liability Insurance and PAT Certificate. I know of one or two venues, that will not allow you to perform or play without them seeing this.
Obviously the more local the band are to you, the cheaper it will be, as there are no travelling costs etc. And I hate to say it, but the smaller they are the cheaper they may also be as there are less people to split the money between! Get your HTB to take you to a couple of venues locally to look at some bands etc, it's the best way. Alternatively, word of mouth is always a good thing, or even the venue may be able to make a recommendation, mine gave me a list of companies that had provided services there for other weddings, that the venue deemed as 'professional' and of an acceptable standard.
Rach
P.S. I went on a bit there didn't I lol, I promise my last post on the subject.
