The Modern Bride
Amanda Statham
(Foulsham, 2003)
£4.99
Although this little book will be of most use to those who have just started their planning, there's plenty for those who are further advanced too. I think it's a really good, reassuring source of information, and excellent value for £4.99 -- little more than the price of a single wedding mag.
All the standard (and very useful) planning checklists are here, but there are also some real nuggets of wisdom scattered around. The 'Style And Beauty' chapter is particularly strong (perhaps unsurprising given that the author has worked on Cosmopolitan Bride magazine). For example, the section detailing what type of lingerie is best for what dress shape gives some useful tips on an area that often isn't touched on by this type of guide, and there are also some calming words about how to deal with a big-day breakout of spots!
In the Photography chapter, there's a nifty little section entitled 'How can I look fabulous in photographs?' which includes tips such as
'Make sure that you are being photographed from above or at eye level, never below, as this will make you appear larger and reveal any unsightly double chins'; 'Take Polaroids of some poses before the wedding and see which ones you like best'; 'Avoid staring into bright sunshine as it makes you screw up your eyes and creates black shadows over the eye sockets.' Yes, I know all this might be a bit full-on for some brides, and in theory you should just be able to relax, smile and look gorgeous on your wedding day, but many will gratefully take these tips on board as a way to look their best in the photos.
A short chapter entitled 'The Future' is a nice touch. After all, looking ahead to your first anniversary and how it's symbolised by 'paper' might just help to alleviate the post-wedding blues a tiny bit (perhaps?).
