Wedding Cakes

by Sylvia Coward

New Holland Publishers

ISBN 1 85368 331 0 (hbk)
ISBN 1 85368 293 4 (pbk)

This 80 page guide is a must for anyone thinking of creating their own wedding cake.
Complete with full step-by-step instructions and colour photographs throughout, this book teaches you a variety of different techniques.

Its starts by comprhensively listing all equipment needed (although i think unless you planned to take cake decorating up full time this would be far too much), as well as showing photographs and describing all you need.
It also has a very good recipe guide. Included are fruit cake, sponge cake and chocolate cakes, again giving step by step insructions. (they are also very good cakes, we have made them using these recipes). It gives quantities needed for all sizes and shapes of cake tins.
Recipes are also given for many different types of icing, and sugarpaste, plus techniques on how to properly cover your cake.
The book then devotes a section on exactly how to make different icing effects, from flood work and embriodery, to flowers and piping, and even including crimping, roping and glass stencils.

The book devotes the last section to actual cakes. All the finished cakes are shown photographed on one entire page, together with more pictures detailing the step-by-step techniques used to make them.

At the back there are templates of all the patterns, leaves, flowers, decoration work you will need.

This book is very good, and the only problem i had is that the designs were not very modern. They probably were when first made - but most modern brides i believe would want something a little more up to date

HOWEVER, in saying that, i have found this book invaluable in creating my cake, and plan to take some of the designs, and then tweak them to make them my own. With the amount of guidance contained in this book, it is very easy to let your creativity flow.

This book is availiable from many online retailers.
