The Best Man, The Duties and the Plan

'The Best Man' covers pretty much everything you need to know about being a Best Man. Areas such as transport and attire are discussed, and after you have read this book you should be well equipped for the big day, and the run up to the big day.

Eames adds little 'did you know' type facts to make reading a little more fun and the job of being the best man a little less daunting. For example, evidently the Stag night is supposed to shake out evil spirits that could hamper the couple's marriage. I certainly have been on a few Stag nights when evil spirits (whiskey, vodka etc) have been present!

I found the seating plans for the reception venue, procession up the aisle and the chancel steps very useful. They certainly help to clarify in your mind exactly where everyone should be. Throughout the book the information you need is presented clearly.

The book also gives us a few tips on planning and presenting speeches. It doesn't go in depth here, but does give some good suggestions. There is a selection of quotations, some would work well but some I thought were quite unsuitable for a wedding speech. I guess it depends what kind of speech you are going to give though!

The book also has a selection of checklists to help you make sure you have got everything in place.

An informative read, I would feel confident after reading 'The Best Man' that I would understand what the role actually entails.

From a Brides prospective:
Having read this from cover to cover, even though I originally thought it was aimed at the Best Man/Groom, it was actually very informative for me too.

Not only does it give a good insight into what the duties of the Best Man and Ushers are for the day, it also helps the whole bridal party organise the day in general, from seating plans/etiquette, to checklists running up to the big day.

There are a few speech ideas, some of them good, and even got a chuckle out of me! and some of them quite cringe worthy, but at least the Best Man will know what not to write having read some of the bad ones.

There are a few little 'facts' added in along the way, mostly quite pointless but i think they break up the text a bit so it makes it a more enjoyable read, and not so heavy going.

Of course everyone will have their own way of how they want there wedding to look etc but this is a good, back to basics place to start, and will give any 'Best man virgin' a good understanding as to what is expected of him.

Overall I good little present for your Best Man, concise but not to long winded that it will send the less enthusiastic of Best Men to sleep!

Hi
read the book before being best man in march and agree was ok but didn't help with the speech. I was cacking myself, got talking to a mate at work who gave me his best man hypnoimp, which is hypnotherapy session pre-loaded onto mp3 player. It sorted me right out, had loads of people telling me how well my speech went and how relaxed and confident i sounded. I'd recommend it especially as it was only £20. I think they have website, its worth a look, good luck
