You know I just don't agree with the amount of homework the Primary School children are getting and also taking exams when they are in Year 2, they should be out playing with friends enjoying themselves while they are still young. I think the Goverment is putting too much pressure on the teachers who have to give them homework/exams, the parents but most importantly the children. Please sign my petition to get rid of homework and exams and to let the children enjoy life and having fun. gopetition

Are you joking
My daughter is in year 2 and she gets 2 lots of homework a week (which in total takes no more than an hour) as well as her daily reading. She is doing really well in school and her homework is an important factor in that. If they got rid of homework and exams we'd end up with a country full of under educated children.
I really do not agree with you and don't understand your reasoning behind this

I agree also with MrsTrott. I have three children of varying ages and my second is just about to leave high school.
Homework is an important part of your child's education as it teaches them independence, a sense of achievement, responsiblity and ability to work to instruction and deadlines (essential for life and work in the future). I personally felt my sons did not get enough homework! My daughter gets far more at primary school.
I am not old fashioned by any means, my children have plenty time to play after the homework is done. Children have a short time to absorb as much information before the brain starts slowing down again. I would sign a petition against getting rid of homework. As for examinations, while I am a fan of continuous assessment, examinations are the only way of showing how well your child is doing and also if there are any problems such as dyslexia etc.
I would happily sign a petition to keep homework and exams as I feel that a lot of children leave school without even the most basic of knowledge. Then they are expected to function in the workplace. Play is important but education is equally important.
Now abolishing school holidays that I might sign

If you feel your child is getting too much homework, why don't you have a chat with her teacher? Her teacher can explain why they feel as much homework is neccessary, and I am sure they will be only too happy to help.
On a personal note, my daughter has three lots of homework per week. She's 9 and doesn't mind doing it. All her homework for the week has to be handed in on a Friday, so she chooses what days she wants to do it, and knows if she leaves it all until Thursday night she will regret it.
My son is 6 and in P2. He gets homework every Tuesday night, and it takes him about 6 minutes or so to complete. He has daily reading too, and he flatly refuses to do any of it. It is becoming a problem, and because he won't continue learning at home he's starting to fall behind at school.
I personally agree with homework, butt hen my children get small amounts. If you feel your child has been given too much (and I have seen this happen in the past) then phone the school and have a chat with them. i am sure they will be only too happy to help.

I have to agree with the other girls I'm afraid. My only issue with exams is the amount of pressure some parents put on thier kids to do well in them, and forcing them to stay in to revise instead of being allowed out.

I am not sure where to stand on this, i think it seems to depend on the school as to how much homework children get, i remember not having anything but reading when i was at lower school but now they get maths english etc. if you feel it's too much then speak to the teachers conserened as some can in my opinion be (the only word i can think of at moment) unfair on occasion in their approach to homework for such young children.
As for exams i don't think it is fair to put so much pressure on young children however i do think it is necessary to have a certain criteria so things such as dyslexia can be found. However saying that i don't think these exams were brought in until after i left but the teachers still managed to spot my reading difficulties!!! and acted upon them and now i love nothing more than curling up with a book. So on that note i guess i'm trying to say that you shouldn't always rely on tests to show these things. I also don't think children should be tested just ` to prove how well a teacher is performing
Apologies if that makes no sense it did in my head!!!

I have been nannying for 12 years and most of the children I looked after were in Primary schools.
I feel for years 1-3 reading is fine and this is what my niece gets and she is year 1.
A little is ok but it does very much depend on the school.
Private schools is far to much for them. I had a girl who was in her final 2 years and she would every night come home with homework that took up all evening she wouldn't even take a break and go and play because she had so much to do.
with regards to exam I think its wrong for children at this level in school.
As to the 11 plus don't get me started one that. I had been through this process many times with my children and I it was hard even I had to do research on some of the questions as they got past papers to use to get the feel of them.
children can have some homework but not lots learning needs to be fun.
I would go in to the school and have a word with their teachers.

Anyway if any person gets the newspaper and see teenagers take their life well then you might try and understand where I am coming from because I do care.
