How on earth do you guys stick to your budget? I thought we were doing really well with ours until this morning!!! Just made a spread sheet of whats doing in and what is going out, but a few unaccepted bills have meant that we have had to use the wedding money. Now looking at it we are at least two grand short and that is before you add on the reception party at home (just the basics!!!) Luckily though not getting married until 2009, so no social life for me from now on!!!
How do you girls do it?

We saved about half the cost of the wedding and have taken out a small loan (which we'll repay in 2 years) for the rest. The first thing we did was sit down and draw up how much we were going to spend on everything, doing a bit of research to try and make sure our estimates were realistic. We did go over in some areas but on the whole we're managing.
Little savings along the way helped. I've tried to get things for the best price I can, scouring the internet is good for this. I got a lot of the little things from Ebay (favours, decorations, etc).
Also asking ourselves whether we really needed something or not and looking for cheaper alternatives. For example, we're having Prosecco at the drinks reception rather than Champagne. We hired a jukebox rather than getting a DJ or band. It all adds up.

thanks for your advice - much appreciated!!!
we are saving £500 a month, but its keeping it there that is a problem we are both working extra shifts at the moment, so im sure we will get there in the end!!! it was just such a shock to see that we were so far behind even though we had been working our socks off!! then we both sat down and looked at it again, realised that we had already paid for some of the things on there!!!
plus
my h2b wanted us to pay for everything includ the reception etc, both parents have offered to pay for things, but we had refused!! think now h2b is realising what we can and cannot afford, maybe he will let our parents help with those little added extras!!! or maybe we shall do as you suggested Seona, pay for half then get a loan for the other half!!! interesting to hear what other people are doing tho!!!
thank you once again

Edited by Seona, 11 Sep 2007 at 01:55PM:I would let your parents help. My mum paid for half my dress (she doesn't have lots of money so that was really good of her) and H2B's parents gave us ??1,000 towards the cost. That really helped. Sometimes family giving money leads to issues of who gets to choose, but if you trust your parents not to try and take control I would accept their offers to help. Oh yes, and my dad did give us some money but we spent that on getting a flat rather than the wedding. If you're saving, what are you saving the money into? We put our money in savings account so the temptation to access it was much lower. I couldn't have just left it sitting in an account. I'd also be realistic about what you can afford to save. If you find it a struggle to save ??500 then cut it down a bit but make a promise to put whatever is left in your account at the end of the month into savings. You could also look at taking out a cash ISA to put your money in. It's tax free so you'll make more money on your savings. moneysupermarketAnd everyone here is so good at money saving tips, don't forget to ask for ideas. Also find out who in your friends and family might be able to help with things. If you can borrow things like cars, or get family friends to do flowers, it all helps.

Emma I am sooo feeling your pain!
We are also struggling to stick to budget but I have managed to save loads by buying stuff on Ebay, we budgeted £400 for the bridesmaids dresses but I got 3 Karen Millen butterfly dresses from ebay for just over £100! Got next bridesmaid shoes from there too, all brand new for £30 all together. My veil is from there are cost £20 and my Tiara just £10!
It just means a lot of trawling through but it can be done. Also we have taken out a loan for half and are saving the rest. H2B parents have put in £1000 to cover the venue and my Dad is a photographer and doing the pics. My mum is paying for the horse and carriage.
Good luck honey xx

oh you guys are so wonderful with advice - thank you
but we are realising that there is no way we can pay for everything that is needed, so our parents are now helping us with the reception, we are still paying for the wedding and everything to do with the wedding, but when we get home the recpetion/party they are going to contribute to!!! bless him!! wasnt so hard asking them either!!!
seona we are putting our money in my visa account at the moment so that we no longer have to pay interest, then the rest shall be going on my isa account that is already open!!!
thank you once again

now thw weddins is so close for us i am having a stressa bout the budget & hoping there will be enough left to pay the bills! the venue's prices have gone up, which they are allowed to do, it was a clause when we paid deposit, not by much but.....eeek
basically tho me & h2b sat down & discussed what aspects of the wedding were inportant to us & which ones we could live with out if we couldn' afford them.
we also found a stationer that made hand made invites which were less then 2 each, we couldn't have done it cheaper ourselves, whih was the original plan.
also my tip would be to go away & think about everything before you buy/ put sown a deposit, is it REALLY what you want? i have wasted money this way on shoes & a veil, just getting caught up in the moment, it does happen cos it's so exciting, take your time.
hth

Don't buy anything straight away. If you see something you like, make a note of it and then give it a day, or even a week. If you still think you must have it, and you can't find it anywhere else cheaper, then buy it.
