You now get 9 months maternity leave compared to the previous 6 and soon it is going up to 12 months. This can also be shared between the parents, if the Mother wanted to go back to work, the father could stay at home instead
Child benefit goes to everyone no matter what your income. It is 18.80 for your first child and 12.55 for every other child (this is weekly - but can be paid 4 weekly)
Tax credits are available to families with children upto a maximum annual income of around 550000. There are 2 elements, working & child, but you only qualify for working tax credit (and the childcare element) if you are a low earner.
Check out this to see if you qualify
Hope this helps

Ok then, apart from the short maternity leave it's not as bad as I thought here. Everyone here gets 2500 euro hand out to pay for baby stuff per child. And a possible 1000 euro from the local government too. Both parents have their tax reduced to the lowest rate and have higher tax returns than before. There is also a 100 euro a month help for mothers who have to work after maternity which we will get too, it's supposed to be for childcare but we won't need that for long thankfully. Thanks for all the info girls, I don't feel so hard done by now.

I just checked and the 12 months will be in force by 2010 (don't know when though) and the Father can take the last 3 months of the 9 months if you want (not likely )
That sounds like a good deal Orla, wish they were as generous in the UK.
I did forget to mention though, if you are on a low income or Income Support you can get a social grant (don't have to pay it back) of up to 500. Plus every child now gets a 250pound voucher to put into a savings account - this gets topped up by another 250 when they reach 7 (I think) and you can add to it monthly

I do really feel for those who are TTC and not getting there yet...
My friend had the opposite problem (actually, two friends' stories here)
One, my bridesmaid, had been careful but had come of the DEPO (you get told 'never going to happen, give yourself a year to get it out of your system' and even though she used other protection, four weeks after coming off the hormone nonsense, she was pregnant.
And didn't know until she was 5 months gone...
(Beautiful nearly 3 yr old boy she has too!)
My other mate has 4 kids - latest is a wee boy , totally scrummy. Her issue is that not only has she had about 10 miscarriages, she has been pregnant whilst on the Pill (taking it properly) combined with condoms etc.etc.
She was also sterilised (twice) as she's been pregnant 4 times since that happened.
She now has a 6 month old baby boy as well. She reckons her husband has 'sperm of Superman' because no matter what they use, she ends up preggers.

Oh my, that's scary. I think I'd be sending SuperSperm hubby off to get the snip.
